The Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) is a high–performing organization located in the north metropolitan area of Atlanta, Georgia.  SSFD provides emergency and medical services over 100,000 residents in a 38 square mile service area. Sandy Springs is the second largest city in the metropolitan Atlanta area and is the seventh largest city in Georgia.

The department currently employs 102 full-time field personnel operating from five fire stations with state of the art equipment.   

Recruitment

Minimum requirements: 

High School Diploma or GED Certificate
United States Citizen
Minimum Age of 18
Veterans Must have an Honorable Discharge
Valid US Driver’s License
NPQ or IFSAC Firefighter I 

Recruitment and Hiring Process
Steps in the Hiring Process:

  1. Complete an online application. 
  2. Successfully complete the Physical Agility Test (PAT) [details will be sent to you prior to your assigned test date]
  3. Interview with the SSFD Recruitment Team (this is where we get to know each other and assess your fit within our organization). The SSFD Recruitment Team is comprised of firefighters and officers within the department and represents the diverse demographics of our organization and community.
  4. Background check (criminal and DVR)[details will be emailed to you]
  5. Preliminary Offer Letter - Following Step 5, you are placed on an eligibility list. SSFD Recruitment fills vacancies in the department from the eligibility list. The list is active for 12 months.
  6. Medical evaluation
  7. Polygraph
  8. Psychological evaluation
  9. Interview with the Fire Chief

The hiring process is a lengthy and involved process, which requires 100% successful completion of each step. The process is designed to single out the best, most suitable firefighter candidates for the City of Sandy Springs.

Prior to the interview with the Fire Chief, you will be fitted for uniforms and firefighting gear.  Following the interview, the newly hired firefighter is assigned to either a recruit school or directly to a working crew depending on experience.

Pay and Benefits

Starting pay for Firefighters in the SSFD remains competitive in the metro area.

  • FF1/EMT - $53,636
  • FF1/PMDC - $58,936
  • FF2/EMT - $63,070
  • FF2/PMDC - $67,405
  • Annual COLA and performance bonus where eligible
  • Additional bonus money yearly for participation in a number of specialty teams (TEMS, TRT Squad, Bike Medics, Honor Guard, Fire and EMS Instructors, Arson Investigators)
  • 148-160 hours of overtime built into the yearly work schedule

Retirement Benefits

  • Full-time city employees receive a contribution of 12% of their annual salary into a 401(a) from the City of Sandy Springs beginning the first of the month following 90 days of employment.  Employees may contribute up to the IRS maximum in a 457(b), and the City matches up to the first 5% of those contributions in their 401(a) for a total possible City contribution of 17%.
