During its March 16, 2021 meeting, the Sandy Springs City Council approved the selection of Hussey Gay Bell as the Project Architect to design a new fire station in the City’s Panhandle.  In February, the City Council approved the purchase of property at 7800 Mt Vernon Road to establish Fire Station No. 5.

Hussey Gay Bell is currently under contract with the City to provide architectural, engineering, and construction administration services connected with the construction of Fire Station No. 2, located on Johnson Ferry Road.  City staff recommended using the firm for Fire Station No. 5 to provide a continuity of services. Hussey Gay Bell will create a new design for Fire Station No. 5, taking into account the unique physical parameters of the property and the character of the surrounding neighborhood.

Hussey Gay Bell was selected to design, prepare construction documents, permit and oversee construction administration for Fire Station No. 2 through a competitive bid process, where the firm was deemed to be the most qualified and provided the lowest cost for the services of the shortlisted group.  The City's Purchasing Policy allows a sole source procurement when it is found to be the most advantageous for fulfilling a given purchasing need.  By utilizing the same firm for both projects, the City can take advantage of Hussey Gay Bell's low fees by extending the design and contract administration services to both fire stations.  The cost of design and contract administration services for Fire Station No. 5 is commensurate with the competitive prices Hussey Gay Bell provided for Fire Station No. 2.  The contract amount for Fire Station No. 5 is $289,885.00.

Design for Fire Station No. 5 will take place late spring.  The public will have an opportunity to comment on the project during community meetings held as part of the zoning process.

The City is adding the fire station to support public safety efforts in the Panhandle district, with a focus on improved response times.
