Status:

Week of 4/22: Construction begins. Milling operations underway; intermittent lane closures.

Project Purpose:

The primary intention of this roadway project is to provide safe access to the Fulton County Government Services Center for pedestrians on the west side of SR 9/Roswell Road. Under existing conditions the nearest traffic signal providing pedestrian crossings is over a thousand feet from the facility. The location was selected to provide adequate sight distance and for its close proximity to MARTA bus stop locations along the east and west sides of SR 9/Roswell Road.

A pedestrian safety beacon will be installed to allow safe access between the North Fulton County Government Service Center and the MARTA bus stop on Roswell Road. A raised, landscaped median will be installed in the project area. Access to Dunwoody Square Townhomes and Big Trees Forest Preserve will remain available on both the east and west sides of Roswell Road. Intermittent lane closures will be in place to allow crews the opportunity to safely complete the project.

History:

In coordination with GDOT, a traffic engineering study was performed in 2019 at the North Fulton Government Center where pedestrian and traffic volume counts were investigated. Upon conclusion of the investigation, this area met the criteria for installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon. The City of Sandy Springs contracted with Pond and Company in 2021 to study crossing locations and develop a concept plan for the crossing.
