Status: Construction Underway

Project Background: During its October 2, 2018 meeting, the Sandy Springs City Council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with Gwinnett County for road improvements at Spalding Drive connecting Sandy Springs and Gwinnett County.   The project will widen Spalding Drive from Winters Chapel to River Exchange and includes replacing the existing bridge.

The Spalding Drive Widening Project is part of Gwinnett County’s 2017 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) program.  The project will widen Spalding Drive from a two-lane road to a four-lane road from Winters Chapel Road to Holcomb Bridge Road.

The project will be coordinated by Gwinnett County, the City of Peachtree Corners and the City of Sandy Springs. The total estimated project cost is $10.8 million, with the City’s contribution an estimated $1.8 million.

Project Description: The City included adding multi-use paths along Spalding Drive as part of the T-SPLOST project. As part of the agreement with Gwinnett County, improvements will include a multi-use path along the south side of Spalding Drive, from Winters Chapel Road to River Exchange Drive, and a sidewalk on the north side of Spalding Drive from Winters Chapel Road to River Exchange Drive. The sidewalks will connect to the existing sidewalks on Holcomb Bridge Road and will provide enhanced connectivity to Crooked Creek Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is construction expected to last – will intersection work and widening of Spalding occur simultaneously?

Construction is anticipated to take 24 months and the current expected completion date is Spring 2022.  The proposed project limits include modifications to the intersection of Spalding Drive with Winters Chapel Road/Spalding Lakes Court.

Will the intersection continue with just a traffic light like there is now, and will there be turn signals for all sides of the light?

The Spalding Drive at Winters Chapel Road/Spalding Lakes Court intersection will remain signalized.  Dedicated turning phases/arrows will be provided for several, but not all movements. The signal operation, which is managed by the City of Sandy Springs, may be adjusted after construction activities cease.

What plans are being made to make access to and from Spalding Lake Court safer?

Improved signal operations for vehicular traffic as well as sidewalks and signalization for pedestrians.

Will Spalding be closed completely during bridge construction?

No, two-way traffic will be maintained throughout construction activities.  There may be shortened turn lane lengths, sidewalk closures, reduced speed limits, and other accommodations common within construction zones.

How will 4 lanes of traffic flow into 2 lanes without major traffic backup?

The westbound, inside travel lane between River Exchange Drive and Winters Chapel Road will “trap” into a dedicated left turn lane to southbound Winters Chapel Road.  Any queuing of traffic should occur within this lane, allowing westbound through traffic on Spalding Drive to avoid this queuing.
